According to the Associated Press (AP), Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. was released from a prison in northern Mexico on Sunday, August 24, 2025.

What did Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.’s defense say about his release?

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.’s lawyer, Ruben Fernando Benitez Alvarez, said that the Mexican court “imposed additional measures and granted three more months of investigation in the case.”

Similarly, Ruben Fernando Benitez Alvarez, said that the accusations against his client are “speculation” and “urban legends“.

What sentence could Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. face if convicted at trial?

If found guilty, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. could face a sentence of four to eight years in prison.

Why was Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. arrested?

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. was arrested on July 2, 2025, by federal agents outside his Los Angeles home, accused of overstaying his visa and lying on his green card application.

At the time of his arrest, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security reported that Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. had an active arrest warrant in Mexico since 2023 for his alleged “involvement in organized crime and trafficking in firearms, ammunition and explosives,” and that he was “considered affiliated with the Sinaloa Cartel.”

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. was deported from the United States to Mexico on August 19, 2025, where he remained in jail until Sunday, August 24, 2025.
