In the midst of a legal situation that has shaken the boxing world, Julio Cesar Chavez, considered a living legend of Mexican sport, broke his silence on Thursday after the arrest of his son, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., in the United States. The family issued a statement expressing their dismay at the case and expressing their full support for the Mexican, who now faces an expedited deportation process.

The arrest was made by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, who reported that Chavez Jr. is considered a threat to public safety. The arrest came just days after his defeat in an exhibition bout against Jake Paul in California, marking a new episode in the complex personal and professional trajectory of the son of the boxing idol.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. arrested by ICE: Alleged links to Sinaloa Cartel and organized crime charges

According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Chavez Carrasco is alleged to have links to the Sinaloa Cartel and faces an active arrest warrant in Mexico since March 2023 for crimes related to organized crime and arms trafficking. “This Sinaloa Cartel affiliate, with an active arrest warrant, was apprehended in Studio City, California,” said Tricia McLaughlin, a DHS spokeswoman.

In addition, US authorities detailed that the former boxer allegedly entered the country with an expired tourist visa and subsequently applied for permanent residency through his marriage to a US citizen related to the family of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman. USCIS classified him as a serious threat in December 2024, and since then his immigration status has been monitored by various agencies.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.’s family demands a fair legal process after his arrest in the United States

Through his social networks, Julio Cesar Chavez shared a statement on behalf of the whole family in which they distance themselves from any illegal act and ask for respect for the presumption of innocence of his son. “We fully trust in his innocence and in his human quality,” reads the message, which also calls on the media to avoid premature judgments and respect due process.

“Julio is, above all, a son, a father and a human being who has faced multiple challenges in his personal and professional life,” the document states, making it clear that, beyond the scandal, the family remains united around his cause. They also made it clear that they will not make any further statements until the case progresses legally, so as not to hinder the work of the authorities in Mexico and the United States.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and the shadow of the champion: media pressure, scandals and the weight of his surname in Mexican boxing

Chavez Jr. has been in the public eye since his first steps as a boxer. Being the son of Mexico’s most celebrated champion put him under constant media pressure. Throughout his career, he faced highlights in the ring, but also personal scandals, such as addiction problems, doping sanctions and public controversies over his behavior.

His father, Julio Cesar Chavez, has spoken openly about the struggle to help him overcome these challenges. “We are dismayed, but firm in our faith that everything will be clarified according to law and truth,” the former boxer added in recent statements. The ongoing legal process could mark a definitive turning point for Chavez Jr, whose immediate future seems to depend on the collaboration between the prosecutors of both countries.
