Juan Soto appears totally devastated after not making the playoffs with the Mets

The New York Mets‘ elimination on the last day of the 2025 season left an image that sums up the feeling of the whole city: Juan Soto, visibly affected, gave an interview where he did not hide his disappointment at not being able to reach the postseason. “Even if you have a great team in theory, no one is going to bring it to you. You have to go out and get it,” said the Dominican outfielder after the loss to the Marlins.

Soto, who signed the highest contract in MLB history to come to Queens, did not shy away from the responsibility: “Even if you have a great team in theory, no one is going to bring it to you. You have to go out and get it,” he said. The elimination, consummated after falling 4-0 to Miami and losing the tiebreaker against Cincinnati, marked the end of a season full of expectations that crumbled in the second half of the schedule.

Why did the Mets miss the MLB playoffs in 2025?

The defeat to the Marlins was just the final chapter in a downward spiral. After a blistering start that saw them go 45-22 in June, the Mets collapsed to 38-55 in their last 93 games. Inconsistent pitching, key injuries and intermittent offense were part of the collapse.

In the final game, the Mets were neutralized by Edward Cabrera, who pitched five scoreless innings and struck out seven batters. The team had only one real chance in the fifth inning, but a Pete Alonso hit was contained thanks to a spectacular catch by Javier Sanoja. In the end, the 4-0 loss and the Reds’ victory left New York out of the playoffs on head-to-head tiebreaker.

Juan Soto: “I’ve been a failure, we have everything, but we have to prove it”

Despite closing the year with outstanding statistics, including franchise records in his first year, Juan Soto was clear in describing the season as a failure

One hundred percent. One season is not going to determine what we have here. We still have everything we need to go all the way

The 26-year-old outfielder faced heavy criticism in the early months, but his performance picked up in the final stretch. However, neither his efforts nor his talent on the roster could prevent a painful outcome. Soto now faces a long offseason, with the pressure of leading a team built to win now and that has failed in its first attempt.
