Josh Simmons placed on IR after confirming surgery

The Kansas City Chiefs have taken another significant hit to their depth chart. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport rookie tight end Josh Simmons was placed on injured reserve following the wrist injury suffered against the Dallas Cowboys on Thanksgiving.

Surgery was required and now he is expected to be on the sidelines for at least four games, leaving the Chiefs without a crucial young player during a crucial stretch of the season.

Time to heal and get back stronger

Simmons’ medical evaluations confirmed that surgery was necessary and the Chiefs opted to move wisely, placing him on IR to begin the recovery process to get him back asap as the team prepares for the final part of the race.

The loss will hurt a team that was enjoying his work. While Simmons is still starting his NFL career, he had been smashing it with a rotational role behind Kansas City’s starters, providing many great size, athleticism, and smart hands in key situations.

Smart and cautelous development

Kansas City will now wait for Simmons’ return calmly, though wrist surgeries can vary in seriousness for pass-catchers who rely on hand strength on nearly every part of the game. Still, optimism remains that the rookie could return later in the season if rehab progresses without setbacks.

For the Chiefs, the timing is obviously far from ideal. As they push deeper into the playoff race, every roster loss is painful. For Simmons, meanwhile, the focus shifts to rehabilitation and getting back stronger than ever. The Chiefs will continue forward with a reshuffled tight-end unit as Simmons begins the road back from his first major NFL injury.
