Josh Allen’s clear path to the Super Bowl comes with a mountain of pressure

The 2025 AFC playoff landscape has positioned Josh Allen as the premier quarterback still standing among the remaining contenders.

While many expected marquee names like Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, and Joe Burrow to dominate the postseason, injuries and early exits have left the field open.

Seasoned veterans like Aaron Rodgers, now 42, or young quarterbacks such as Bo Nix and Drake Maye, still in their second seasons, fail to present the same level of threat as Allen.

Other notable quarterbacks, Justin Herbert, CJ Stroud, and Trevor Lawrence, remain talented but have not emerged as MVP-level contenders this year.

Meanwhile, Daniel Jones is sidelined, further emphasizing Allen‘s unique positioning.

For Allen, the stakes go beyond mere odds or playoff seeding. FanDuel currently lists the Buffalo Bills at +850 to win the Super Bowl, the best among AFC teams despite New England Patriots having more regular-season wins and a head-to-head victory over the Bills.

While betting lines suggest competitive balance, Allen and the Bills are primarily focused on cementing a legacy rather than chasing odds.

“Allen is at his best and in his prime. He has a chance to finally claim a Super Bowl title, and his legacy is on the line,” analysts note.

A rare playoff setup and its implications

Historically, Allen has struggled in the postseason against elite teams, with four of his seven playoff losses coming at the hands of Kansas City Chiefs.

Against all other opponents, he maintains a strong 7-2 record, including victories over formidable defenses. This season, however, the playoff bracket may provide his cleanest path yet.

As the projected No. 5 seed, the Bills are expected to face a middling Pittsburgh Steelers squad in the first round. Should they advance, the path continues against either the Patriots or Denver Broncos, teams with strong defenses but younger quarterbacks, which could present a more manageable challenge for Allen’s skill set.

This opportunity carries significant pressure. If Allen fails to win the Super Bowl in 2025, critics are expected to question his ability to secure a championship at all.

Analysts note, “If Allen can’t win the AFC this year, there will be serious questions among analysts about whether he can ever win the big game. Regardless of what happens, that will be the media narrative if the Bills come up short.”

With prime athletic performance and an unusually favorable playoff picture, the narrative for Allen is clear: a missed opportunity this season could define his career trajectory.

While talent and experience are on his side, the pressure to perform remains intense. Allen enters this postseason with a unique combination of opportunity, prime form, and external scrutiny.

The coming weeks will determine whether the Buffalo Bills can finally translate potential into a Super Bowl appearance and secure Allen’s long-sought place among the NFL’s elite champions.
