Jose Mourinho stays tight-lipped on Vinicius racism row ahead of Benfica vs Real Madrid

Benfica manager José Mourinho has opted for a measured approach amid the ongoing fallout following the alleged racist abuse of Real Madrid star Vinicius Junior by his own player, Gianluca Prestianni.

With the crucial second leg of the UEFA Champions League tie against Real Madrid approaching at the Santiago Bernabéu, Mourinho has largely refrained from publicly commenting on the matter, emphasizing that his squad’s focus remains firmly on the game itself.

The incident that sparked widespread attention occurred during the first-leg clash in Lisbon, when Vinicius reportedly reacted after claiming he was subjected to a racial insult from Prestianni. The allegations quickly drew the attention of UEFA, which has provisionally suspended Prestianni while the investigation continues.

The situation has also sparked heated discussions across the football community, placing both clubs under intense media scrutiny.

Rather than engage in the controversy, Mourinho has kept his statements brief and professional. When pressed by journalists, he acknowledged the difficulty of the situation but declined to provide specific details.

A Benfica club representative later reinforced the stance, clarifying that an official UEFA investigation is ongoing and that Mourinho would not comment further at this stage. This approach indicates a desire by Benfica to maintain focus on football while allowing UEFA’s processes to unfold without interference.

Mourinho stresses professional focus amid tension

Despite the tension surrounding the club, Mourinho insisted that life at Benfica has continued with professionalism. He acknowledged that the situation had created challenges for everyone involved, but emphasized that both players and staff had managed to maintain focus.

“It has been difficult for everyone. I am not going to specify at what level the difficulties were. They and I were able to be professional,” he said, highlighting the team’s resilience.

Benfica’s cautious strategy aligns with Mourinho‘s broader approach to high-stakes matches, particularly as they prepare for one of the season’s most prominent fixtures.

The club has been in strong form domestically, remaining unbeaten in the Primeira Liga, though a series of draws has seen them fall behind in the title race.

Mourinho has repeatedly emphasized improvements in tactical discipline and squad cohesion, presenting his team as ready to meet the challenge of Real Madrid on their home turf.

The wider football world continues to monitor the situation closely. Critics have debated Mourinho‘s previous remarks in the aftermath of the first-leg match, where he appeared to question Vinicius‘ reactions while defending Benfica’s long-standing stance against racism.

Meanwhile, UEFA’s ethics and disciplinary inspector continues to collect evidence, leaving Prestianni sidelined for the return fixture.

By prioritizing his team’s preparation and stability, Mourinho is attempting to ensure that the controversy does not overshadow Benfica’s performance in one of the Champions League’s most anticipated encounters.
