Joey Gallo forced to accept White Sox minor league deal

For experienced MLB players, entering free agency can be synonymous with reaching lucrative contracts that allow them to close their careers with economic and professional tranquility. However, there are exceptions, as in the case of Joey Gallo.

His experience has allowed him to play both infield and outfield positions. He has worn important jerseys such as the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers and Texas Rangers. However, the road is capricious and he will now sign a minor league contract with the Chicago White Sox, a plot twist that few saw coming.

Veterans often get promoted, but playing in the minors is a harsh reality for free agents in today’s market. However, his fans hope to see him back next year as the contract includes an invitation to the major leagues at any time.

After 10 years of experience in the majors, free agency did not favor him and he chose to join the Chicago White Sox affiliates. It seemed like a step backwards for a veteran, although he is keen to return to the MLB with the White Sox, in what would be his sixth team in his professional career.

This would be possible if he provides great performances with fielding, batting and run production to catch the attention of recruiters.

What happened for MLB teams to discard him?

His last performances with the Washington Nationals saw him hit 10 home runs, 36 hits and 24 runs in 223 at-bats in 76 games. These were numbers that disappointed management and that was enough for them to reject his $8 million mutual option.

On the other hand, for the Chicago White Sox management, having Joey Gallo among the rookies will inspire the young talent and their entire process to move up to the majors. It is certainly a “win-win” opportunity, that is, he stays active with the possibility of returning to MLB and teaching future baseball stars.

Big names such as Pete Alonso and Alex Bregman went unsold until the last minute, and Gallo probably wouldn’t have gotten any deal if he hadn’t accepted the minor league deal. But time will tell if the move was the right one.
