Jimmy Butler injury update: MRI brings bad news for the Warriors

Jimmy Butler‘s season is over after the Golden State Warriors confirmed the forward suffered a serious right knee injury that will keep him sidelined for the remainder of the campaign.

The injury occurred at the 7:41 mark of the third quarter during Monday’s game against his former team, the Miami Heat, when Butler landed awkwardly in the paint following contact with Davion Mitchell, who was called for a foul.

Butler was helped off the court and scheduled for an MRI, with the team initially planning to wait until Tuesday for an update. Overnight, ESPN reported that Butler had torn his anterior cruciate ligament, an injury that typically requires months of recovery.

The moment immediately silenced the arena. Butler‘s knee buckled as he came down, and he remained on the floor for several minutes, grimacing while clutching the joint as teammates and staff gathered around him.

When he finally stood, he needed help from Gary Payton II and Buddy Hield and was unable to put any weight on his right leg as he was escorted to the locker room.

Even in visible pain, Butler‘s competitive instinct surfaced. He appealed for two free throws from the floor, something Warriors head coach Steve Kerr noticed straight away.

“We’re all really concerned but we’ll know more after the MRI,” Kerr said postgame. “Everybody is subdued because of the injury, waiting to hear the news.”

A rare sight as Golden State absorbs the blow

The scene was unsettling precisely because it was so uncharacteristic. Butler has built his reputation on toughness and resilience, rarely staying down after heavy contact. Seeing him unable to walk off under his own power underlined the severity of the situation.

Kerr did not minimise the impact of losing Butler for the rest of the season.

“He’s an alpha. He’s one of those guys in the league who everybody else in the gym knows that’s the guy,” Kerr said.

“He has that presence but he also has that game where we can play through him possession after possession. So, assuming we’ll be without him for a little bit, we’re going to miss him, we’ve got a lot of players who can play and we’re showing our depth right now. We’ll just wait for the news to figure out what’s next.”
