Jerry Jones promises major defensive overhaul for Dallas Cowboys after disappointing 2025 season

The Dallas Cowboys‘ 2025 campaign has crumbled into disappointment, and team owner Jerry Jones finally took the spotlight to address just how far afield the franchise’s defense has drifted.

Jones‘s candid remarks this week suggested that the remedy won’t hinge on a single scapegoat, even as mounting speculation around defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus‘s future dominates fan and media discussion.

In a season where the Cowboys are on the outside of the playoff picture again, Jones appeared on Dallas sports radio 105.3 The Fan, offering a blunt assessment of a defensive unit that has repeatedly failed to stall opposing offenses.

The club’s struggles are stark: Dallas ranks among the league’s worst in yards allowed and scoring defense, and few metrics, from pass defense to pressure statistics, reflect competitive play.

“More than one person had their finger in this,” Jones said of offseason changes.

“We’re trying to solve the problem and get better where we are, and one guy is not gonna do that. It’s not all Eberflus at all … that was a team-wide breakdown.”

His words, underscoring that accountability doesn’t end with the defensive coordinator, injected further ambiguity into a conversation long fixated on Eberflus.

For weeks, fans and commentators have speculated about his job security amid Dallas‘s inability to consistently stop drives, pressure quarterbacks, or force turnovers.

Yet, Jones also made a firm promise to the fanbase: “We will get better on defense, I promise you that.”

Those assurances, as much a plea as a declaration, acknowledge both the urgency of improvement and the complexities of correcting a unit that has underperformed at nearly every level.

Behind the scenes, the Cowboys may indeed be contemplating a broader restructuring.

Recent franchise moves, including releasing cornerback Trevon Diggs after a public falling out, hinted that personnel changes are already underway.

Looking beyond the coordinator’s office

While many observers have centered their critiques on Eberflus and his playcalling, Jones‘s comments refocused the lens on the entire defensive apparatus.

Even with notable additions like All-Pro defensive tackle Quinnen Williams sparking brief improvements, the unit has largely failed to translate talent into results.

Last offseason’s blockbuster trade of star defender Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers netted Dallas significant future draft capital, assets that could reshape the defense.

How that capital is deployed in the April 2026 NFL Draft will be among the most consequential decisions for a franchise seeking a turnaround.

While Jones stopped short of promising specific firings or structural overhauls, the tenor of his remarks signaled a change in thinking.

Instead of relying on incremental tweaks, the Cowboys owner framed next season as a pivotal opportunity to reimagine a defense that has been a glaring weakness.
