Jay Glazer reveals Mike Tomlin’s role in covering up Steelers’ internal issues

Mike Tomlin’s long-standing role in shielding the Pittsburgh Steelers’ internal shortcomings has come into sharper focus following his stunning decision to step away from coaching, a move that has forced the franchise to confront issues long kept out of public view.

The 53-year-old head coach reportedly informed players of his departure during a team meeting after Pittsburgh’s 30-6 home playoff loss to the Houston Texans.

The announcement marked a sudden end to one of the most stable coaching tenures in NFL history and sent shockwaves through the organization and its fan base.

Tomlin leaves Pittsburgh after guiding the Steelers to the 2025 AFC North title alongside quarterback Aaron Rodgers. He departs without ever having a losing season, a résumé that cemented his reputation as one of the league’s most respected leaders and helped preserve the Steelers’ image as a model franchise.

However, new commentary from NFL insider Jay Glazer suggests Tomlin’s success also masked deeper organizational problems.

With Tomlin, the Steelers traded growth for stability

Appearing on The Barstool Sports Show, Glazer said Tomlin “covered up” significant issues within the roster and front office, allowing the team to remain competitive despite structural weaknesses.

Glazer pointed to the Steelers’ lack of a long-term quarterback solution, an aging defense, and an organizational reluctance to spend aggressively as problems that were largely obscured by Tomlin’s leadership.

He also questioned whether the franchise’s celebrated coaching stability has prevented necessary self-examination.

“They don’t spend like other teams,” Glazer said, predicting a difficult transition period as Pittsburgh adjusts to life without Tomlin’s steady presence.

With Tomlin gone, scrutiny has intensified around team president Art Rooney II and whether the organization is equipped to adapt in a rapidly evolving NFL. Critics argue Pittsburgh’s traditional approach may now be a liability as it enters an uncertain new era.

Who could fill the void left by Tomlin?

As the Steelers begin their search for a successor, defensive-minded coaches have emerged as early favorites, including Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores and Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula.

Offensive candidates are also under consideration, with Rams passing game coordinator Nathan Scheelhaase among the names mentioned.

For the first time in nearly two decades, Pittsburgh faces a future without Mike Tomlin – and with it, the challenge of addressing issues that were long hidden beneath sustained success.
