Javier Aguirre begins the road to the 2026 World Cup with a full infirmary in the Mexican national team

There was once a Mexican national team that, for many years, was seen as the giant of Concacaf. Its fans filled the stadiums with hope and pride to see their team dominate and display good soccer. However, as time went by, the good play and the stars began to fade

The Liga MX no longer produces as much talent as it used to, and players who used to dazzle now barely manage to be just another player in small teams in Europe. Just when the world’s most important soccer tournament, the 2026 World Cup, is approaching, a wave of injuries is hitting the Mexican team, leaving Javier Aguirre’s Mexican national team with very few quality options, further complicating the road to glory in a World Cup that is also being played on Mexican soil.

Javier Aguirre’s Mexican national team with nine injured players before the 2026 World Cup

A little more than 130 days before the start of the 2026 World Cup with the match between the Mexican national team and South Africa, Javier Aguirre still does not have a definitive list of who will be the players who will defend the colors of the Mexican flag.

Before the final roster is closed, nine Mexican players, some of the most talented, are currently injured, waiting to see how they progress and others waiting to see if they will even be able to give 90% if they are called up for the 2026 World Cup.

The injured Mexican national team players are:

  • Mexico’s national team captain, Edson Alvarez.
  • Defenders Israel Reyes, Rodrigo Huescas and Jesus Orozco Chiquete.
  • The midfielders Gilberto Mora (the 17-year-old gem) and Luis Chavez.
  • The forwards Alexis Vega (two-time champion with Club Toluca in Liga MX), Cesar “Chino” Huerta and Santiago Gimenez (currently with Milan in Serie A), are the players who are out of any professional soccer activity.

Javier Aguirre optimistic towards the 2026 World Cup

The outlook for the Mexican national team looks complicated ahead of the 2026 World Cup, however, the coach has decided to put a good face on the bad moment and wait until the last moment that FIFA gives him to give the final list, hoping that some of the best players can recover and prove their level to enter the final list for the World Cup.

Without a doubt, none of these players would want to miss the most important football event, especially when it is taking place in their own country. Some of these players will not make it due to the severity of their injuries, but some could be recovered in just a few months
