Jason Whitlock lashes out against the culture that “protects” African American athletes from constructive criticism

Wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., who is currently a free agent seeking an NFL team willing to sign him, has once again become a central topic due to comments he made some time ago on the podcast The Pivot, which have now reemerged in the public spotlight and are circulating widely.

It is worth recalling that Beckham Jr. entered the NFL with the New York Giants, where he enjoyed several strong early seasons before fading and bouncing around the league. His spectacular one-handed catch against the Dallas Cowboys remains one of the most admired plays in NFL history, as he arched backward in an almost inhuman way to secure a touchdown that instantly became iconic.

Although he had more good games after that moment, he never again replicated a play of such magnitude. He eventually left the Giants and began a difficult stretch that ultimately led to his current situation outside the league. He has even faced legal issues, and despite recently announcing his intention to return to the NFL, no team has approached him-not even for a practice squad role.

The viral Odell Beckham Jr. comment that resurfaced and is now trending

On The Pivot, the former receiver discussed how the earnings players accumulate throughout their careers are not enough to create generational wealth; not even $100 million, he said, is sufficient for that purpose.

These remarks generated significant reactions among fans and analysts, including Jason Whitlock.

It was illegal for anyone to criticize OBJ’s irresponsible behavior. You would be convicted of racism or selling out. So-called ‘black culture’ makes it illegal to give young black men constructive criticism.

It is important to recall what Beckham Jr. said on the podcast regarding his income and spending habits, noting how much money disappears through taxes and other obligations.

I’ve always explained this to people, bro, you give somebody a five-year, $100-million contract – what is it really?”… “It’s five years for 60 (million). You’re getting taxed. Do the math, that’s 12 a year that you have to spend, use, save, invest, flaunt, whatever.

Odell Beckham Jr.

I’mma buy a car, I’mma give my momma a house.’ Everything costs money. So, if you’re spending $4 million a year, that’s really $40 million over five years, eight a year.

Over his 11 years in the league, Beckham has earned more than $100,000,000, and naturally, his statements resonated strongly with the public.

Through a tweet, the receiver addressed the reaction to his earlier comments about how $100 million does not necessarily create generational wealth.

Boy u can’t say nothin in this world nowadays, that’s why I been in my own lane my own world n put the way. People love to take Shxt completely outta context to rationalize a statement in their own head that makes sense to them… what a world.

As he continues his search for a team, the situation may give him time to reflect on the comments he made earlier.
