There is no doubt that the Kansas City Chiefs have had enormous dominance over the Denver Broncos in recent years. Although Denver beat Kansas City last season in the final week to clinch a playoff spot, their record in the Patrick Mahomes era has been rough. The three-time Super Bowl champion has a 13-1 career record against the Broncos.
Now is a big opportunity for the Denver Broncos, although the oddsmakers don’t consider them favorites, despite being the leaders of the AFC West and having won seven straight games. The respect for Patrick Mahomes remains, but this could be the Chiefs’ last call, as they are currently out of the playoff picture.
The NFL is cruel, and just a couple of weeks ago, after their win over the Raiders, the Chiefs were the hottest team in the league and Patrick Mahomes was the MVP favorite. But after the loss to the Buffalo Bills, everything changed: they are far from the playoffs, and Mahomes is no longer among the top three MVP candidates.
Matt Nagy, the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator, was questioned
That game against the Buffalo Bills was lethal for the Chiefs. That afternoon-evening, they couldn’t contain Josh Allen, who set a personal record for completion percentage. In addition, the defense was all over Patrick Mahomes, who finished with just 250 passing yards and one interception.
In that game, Patrick Mahomes looked completely frustrated because he saw no openings, and Matt Nagy, the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator, was questioned about the situation. He said: “We were not efficient at the end of the half with getting a touchdown. We got a field goal from the 1-yard line. And they stopped us on fourth down. So, the things that we’ve been good at most of the year, we struggled with and that’s a credit to Buffalo. They did a great job of putting us in those positions, and they’re a good football team.”
And heading into this crucial week, Matt Nagy has a lot of work and a lot to prove. It won’t be easy, especially when facing one of the best defenses in the NFL – the Denver Broncos: “Well, that’s the very first thing that jumps out on tape. You go back to some of the statistics, and you see the one thing that jumps out to me is, red-zone-wise, it’s not just this year that they’re No. 1 – they’re good every year,” the offensive coordinator said.
By the way, one situation worth mentioning – although still just a rumor – is that some analysts believe the Chiefs should bring in Brian Daboll as their offensive coordinator for 2026. So from now on, Matt Nagy’s work will be under a microscope.
