Is Serena Williams really making a tennis comeback or is she just falling in love with the sport again?

Serena Williamshas kept her fans on edge as she slowly drops clear hints that the tennis racket is back in her hand. For many, her decision to step away marked the end of a major era in the sport. Letting her go was not easy. Some believe she never fully closed that chapter, despite a career that needed no more validation. Others felt she walked away at the right time. What everyone agrees on is that her farewell was difficult to process.

Since her loss in the third round of the US Open in 2022, the 23-time Grand Slam champion has not played a competitive match. Still, tennis has not disappeared from her life. In her current phase, often sharing moments through social media, Williams has shown that the sport is once again part of her routine. She has admitted that returning to the court after time away was not easy. After years of handling the pressure that came with being world No. 1, stepping back was necessary. Now, the question resurfaces: is she preparing for a comeback, or simply reconnecting with the game that shaped her?

The comeback talk grows louder

Speculation intensified when Williams re-entered the drug testing pool in October 2025. That move immediately fueled comeback discussions. Six months later, her eligibility window reopened on February 22, making her officially able to compete again. She has not confirmed a return, but she has been reconnecting with the court.

Former coach Rick Macci believes a comeback is likely. Former world No. 9 Andrea Petkovic has also said she expects Williams back on tour, and not just for doubles alongside her sister. The sense around the tennis world is that where there is smoke, there may be fire.

Indian Wells in sight?

One possible stage for a return is Indian Wells, one of the biggest tournaments outside the Grand Slams. Wildcard spots are still available, and Venus Williams has already received entry for both singles and doubles. The setting would be fitting if Serena chooses to step back into competition.

At 44 years old, a return would be significant, but nothing is confirmed. The balance could tilt either way. For now, fans continue to watch closely, aware that with Serena Williams, nothing is ever ordinary. Whether this is the start of another chapter or simply a renewed love for tennis, the story is unfolding on her terms.
