Is LeBron James ‘on the way out’? Former NBA player weighs in

When LeBron James scored only 10 points in the Los Angeles Lakers’ 125-108 loss to the Phoenix Suns on Monday, former NBA player Chandler Parsons didn’t hold back.

Parsons suggested that the Lakers superstar might finally be “on the way out,” marking a potential turning point in the career of one of basketball’s all-time greats.

Parsons painted a picture of James as “an older version” of himself, a sharp contrast to the dominant player who has consistently defined an era.

He argued that this performance was not just a one-off slump but perhaps an early sign of decline, describing it as “the first step on the way out.”

“This was the first time in my life I saw an older LeBron James play and look like his age,” said Parsons.

At 40 years old, James is playing in his 23rd NBA season after opting into a $52.6 million player option for 2025-26.

Since returning this season, he has appeared in just five games, averaging approximately 15.2 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 7.2 assists per contest.

While these numbers remain respectable for most players, they are well below the superstar standard that James has maintained for nearly two decades.

Is James’ time with the Lakers nearing an end?

Despite his credentials, the Lakers‘ approach appears to be shifting.

The team has been focusing on younger talent such as Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves, signaling a potential transition away from a roster centered on James.

Observers note that his contract may increasingly be seen as an “expiring asset,” providing the Lakers with financial flexibility.

Even so, there are no confirmed plans for a trade or buyout. LeBron remains on the roster as Los Angeles continues to pursue a championship run.

For the Lakers, balancing respect for James‘ legacy with team needs may require difficult decisions in the coming seasons.

Whether this year becomes a farewell tour or simply a chapter of transition will depend on on-court performance and the front office.
