Kike Hernandez is once again trending for a gesture on social media that has called into question his future with the Dodgers. In MLB, so close to the start of the 2026 season, even the smallest detail is considered a clue about the future of some players, and the perfect example is Kike Hernandez‘ simple shrug in response to a question. That simple movement, without a single word, was enough to unleash a series of speculations

Kike Hernandez and the gesture that sparked the conversation in MLB

On February 10, 2026, during a casual encounter with a fan, Kike Hernandez was asked about his possible return to the Dodgers. His response, or rather his non-response, was enough to make social media explode. The Puerto Rican utility player simply shrugged his shoulders.

As the countdown to MLB’s Spring Training continues, uncertainty about Hernandez is becoming one of the most talked about topics among the Los Angeles Dodgers fans

Why hasn’t Kike Hernandez signed with the Dodgers yet?

Currently a free agent, Hernandez has not officially announced his return to the Dodgers, although interest between the two parties seems to exist. The delay has a medical explanation, as the player underwent surgery on his left elbow during the offseason.

This surgery would leave him out of Opening Day 2026, which influences the timing of negotiations. However, within the organization they do not close the door. In fact, president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman has hinted that a return could be a matter of time.

Sources close to the team indicate that a possible deal would also depend on freeing up space on the 40-man roster. It is a technical move that could delay any official announcement, although insiders believe the meeting is viable.

For the Dodgers, Kike Hernandez’s versatility remains a differential value, there is no doubt about that, his numbers support him: In the 2025 season he played 92 games, hit 10 home runs and drove in 35 runs. Although his offensive averages dropped compared to previous years, his ability to play multiple positions keeps him an attractive piece.

Hernandez can cover the infield and outfield, provide solid defense and appear in key moments. That utility player profile is especially valuable in a long season like MLB.

For now, hope remains alive, the Dodgers know that having such a versatile player as him is decisive in the end, when injuries appear bench depth is what wins seasons, and money, for the two-time champion team, is not a problem.
