Is Errol Spence Jr.’s retirement true? Latest information raises doubts

The future of Errol Spence Jr. remains uncertain, although his most loyal followers still hope to see him back in action. However, as time goes by, doubts grow as to whether the former unified welterweight champion will return to the ring. His prolonged silence and the lack of concrete news about possible fights fuels speculation about a possible retirement.

Since his crushing defeat to Terence Crawford in July 2023, Spence Jr. has not been active in the ring. Although there was talk of a possible matchup with Sebastian Fundora, this seems to have evaporated, as the current super welterweight champion is looking for other opponents. Although Spence has publicly denied his retirement, boxing analyst Rick Glaser has sounded the alarm with a recent statement in which he claims that Spence may have made the decision not to fight ever again.

The signs of an early farewell

On social media, Glaser shared that the rumors of a possible retirement are more than just speculation. In his message, he noted that Spence would be opting to walk away from boxing, leaving behind a remarkable career with a record of 28 wins and only one loss, as well as having accumulated multiple world titles. According to Glaser, this decision would be more about a desire to preserve his health than a lack of competitive opportunities.

Health problems have accompanied Spence’s career: a car accident in 2019, an eye injury in 2021 and another crash in 2022 have been significant obstacles. Added to this, the emotional impact after his fall against Crawford could have been a decisive factor. Despite having the option to activate a rematch clause, Spence chose not to do so, which many interpret as a clear sign of his possible retirement.

Fan opinion

The reactions of fans have been varied. Many have expressed their respect and gratitude towards Spence for his career, noting that he has achieved enough and that his health should be the priority. Several comments have highlighted his legacy as one of the best of his generation and applauded his bravery inside and outside the ring. In contrast, others believe that he still has something more to offer and that one last fight could be the ideal way to close his career with dignity.

Some fans argue that a defeat, even as harsh as the one suffered against Crawford, should not completely define his legacy. While they recognize the quality of the opponent, they believe that Spence still has the talent to compete, at least against lesser opponents. The debate over whether or not he should retire is still open, and reflects the difficulty many boxers face when making a definitive decision about their future.
