Is Curry the GOAT of his era? Garnett and Shaq have their opinions

The GOAT debate continues to surround the name of Golden State Warriors superstar Steph Curry, and now Kevin Garnett has added his voice, viewing Curry as the player who could go down in history as the greatest of the current NBA era, even ahead of LeBron James.

There is no doubt that over the past two decades, the names Curry and James have been at the center of the conversation, fueling an ongoing debate about who truly is the best. While opinions about the Warriors star increasingly lean toward praise, those endorsements are now coming more frequently from some of the most respected figures in basketball history.

During the podcast “Ticket and The Truth with Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce,” Garnett made his stance clear to Paul Pierce when discussing who holds the upper hand in this generational showdown.

I’ve said this countless times. I think that we’re in the Curry era. He is the GOAT of this era. When we talk about the long ball and the 3 ball, you got to talk about the messiah of that long ball, you understand, and that’s how I look at it.

Paul Pierce

Said the Hall of Famer.

For Garnett, the current moment in the NBA represents a period of consolidation, as several young players are quickly assuming star roles within their teams-doing so at even younger ages than previous generations. As a result, he believes the league is entering a phase of intense competitiveness.

I’m so excited about what the future is…the rookies that’s coming, that came into the league this year, (Kon Knueppel), (Cooper) Flagg, (Derik) Queen … and all these guys. Then we got another rookie class coming in 2026.

We’re gonna look at all these certified superstars, and we got all these young hungry wolves just, man, bro, the league is gonna be in a really good place.

Shaquille O’Neal’s opinion on Curry

Shaquille O’Neal recently reignited the conversation by asking whether it is time to seriously consider Stephen Curry among the greatest players in NBA history, even suggesting that the Warriors star may have already surpassed him.

This is not the first time O’Neal has spoken glowingly about Curry.

Nobody plays better than Steph Curry. He’s a tough-shot taker, tough-shot maker. I like where he’s taken his career. I love ‘Rocky’-type stories. … Steph wasn’t highly recruited. So, to be able to work that hard and become the best shooter and one of the best players in the league, he gets my respect for that. I love that kid.

Said the four-time NBA champion last august.

Curry has previously responded to such praise by downplaying individual recognition, emphasizing that sustained success only comes through continued hard work.
