Is Anthony Volpe in danger with the Yankees who may already be thinking about benching him?

Anthony Volpe, who is expected to be a cornerstone of the Yankees infield, is going through a tough time. Consistency at the plate has not arrived and his defensive errors are beginning to have direct consequences on the outcome of games. His most recent blunder, in a decisive eighth inning against the Angels, allowed the game-defining run to score and set off alarm bells.

Volpe, winner of the 2023 Gold Glove, is still not reaching that point of maturity that is expected of a starting shortstop in New York. Despite publicly accepting responsibility, in the Bronx the margin for error is minimal. The pressure is mounting, not only because of his poor offensive performance, but because in the minor leagues there is already someone pushing hard on the door.

George Lombard Jr., the name that is starting to make waves

While Volpe tries to rediscover his best form, George Lombard Jr. has begun to catch the eye in the Yankees’ development system. At just 19 years of age, he has not only shone with the glove, but has also demonstrated positional intelligence, natural leadership and athletic ability to cover multiple positions. A profile that fits with what the team needs: renewed energy and immediate results.

Internal reports highlight his ability to execute spectacular plays and his maturity on the diamond. Although he has not yet been called up, Lombard Jr.’s rise is already making noise among fans and the media. If his progression continues, his debut may not be too far away, especially if Volpe fails to stabilize his game in the most demanding stretch of the season.

New York is a city with no patience for prolonged slumps. And at the Yankees, more than any other team, opportunities are won and lost with every at-bat. Anthony Volpe still has time to respond, but in the meantime, George Lombard Jr. is waiting in the wings.
