Controversy surrounds the Senegal national team after a video emerged of their coach, Pape Thiaw, holding the African Cup of Nations trophy inside a military base, days after the title was stripped by the Confederation of African Football.

The images, which quickly circulated on social media, show the Senegalese coach escorted by armed elements while displaying the trophy in a high-security facility.
The gesture has been interpreted as a symbolic response to CAF’s decision to annul the championship won by Senegal. According to reports, the trophy was taken to a military base where it remains under guard and was presented to military personnel.
CAF annulled the title and awarded it to Morocco
The conflict originated after the final against Morocco, which Senegal had won 1-0 in extra time with a goal from Pape Gueye.
However, the end of the match was marked by controversy: a penalty in favour of Morocco sparked protests from the Senegalese bench. After reviewing the facts, CAF’s appeals committee ruled that Senegal had abandoned the field.
As a result, the governing body decreed a 3-0 administrative defeat and awarded the title retroactively to Morocco.
Senegal will appeal the decision to the CAS
The reaction of the Senegalese Football Federation was not long in coming. The body described the resolution as unfair and unacceptable, and confirmed that it will appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, based in Lausanne.
In this way, the dispute for the championship remains open, pending a final resolution in the legal sphere.

The episode that sparked the controversy included the intervention of Sadio Mane, who persuaded his teammates to allow Brahim Diaz to take the penalty.
