How the Charlotte Hornets are quietly rewriting NBA history with the highest average margin in victories

The NBA season is reaching its final stretch, and while the Detroit Pistons (52-19) currently, they have the fewest losses in the Eastern Conference and the best record heading into the playoffs with just ten games left. One of the most surprising stories has been the Charlotte Hornets.

The Hornets are currently the team with the longest active postseason drought in the NBA, but for the first time in franchise history, they are firmly in the mix for the play-in tournament. Since January 1, Charlotte has looked like a completely different team, playing with confidence and showing real signs of growth.

Hornets Lead All-Time in Average Margin of Victory During Wins

A viral graphic this week highlighted just how dominant the Hornets have been when they get rolling. Charlotte currently leads the all-time list with an average point differential of +18.1 in their wins this season. For context, the next closest recent teams on that list are the 2024-25 Oklahoma City Thunder (+17.3) and the 2021-22 Boston Celtics (+16.9), both of the last two NBA chamipons. The 1970-71 Milwaukee Bucks (+17.5) and 2011-12 Philadelphia 76ers (+16.8) round out the top five.

Overall, the Hornets sit at a modest +2.5 net rating per game. That tells the real story: when they win, they often blow teams out. When they lose, they tend to get blown out. It’s the mark of a slightly above .500 team with explosive upside but still some inconsistency.

The +18.1 margin in victories looks like a dynasty on paper, while the overall +2.5 net rating shows exactly what they are right now-a fun, dangerous team that can beat anyone on a given night but isn’t quite elite yet.

What This Means for Charlotte’s Playoff Push

This blowout ability has been fueled by strong play from Brandon Miller, LaMelo Ball’s playmaking when healthy, and the emergence of rookie Kon Knueppel, who has been one of the most efficient three-point shooters in the league.

The Hornets still have work to do to lock down a play-in spot, but the combination of youth, spacing, and occasional dominance has given fans real hope that this long postseason drought could finally end this spring.

With the playoffs approaching, Charlotte has momentum on its side. If they can maintain this level of play for two more weeks they have a legitimate shot at ending years of irrelevance and making their first playoff appearance over a decade.
