After a historic 2025 season in which he rewrote the NFL’s single-season sack record, Myles Garrett is setting his sights on an even loftier achievement.
The Cleveland Browns‘ defensive end, who already shattered one milestone, now openly wants to chase down the all-time career sack benchmark held by Hall of Famer Bruce Smith.
Garrett‘s 2025 campaign was one for the ages. He finished the season with 23 sacks, topping the mark previously set at 22.5 by Michael Strahan in 2001 and later tied by T.J. Watt in 2021.
That effort not only etched his name atop the single-season leaderboard but also cemented his status as one of the NFL’s premier pass rushers.
His combination of speed and relentless pursuit makes him one of the most feared defenders in the league, capable of changing the momentum of a game with a single play.
“I’m going to take that down,” Garrett said in a recent interview with Casino Guru News, adding that he’d prefer to accomplish it within the next five years.
Garrett noted this ambition has been with him since his college days at Texas A&M, long before he became one of football’s most feared defenders.
He emphasized that the goal isn’t just about numbers but about leaving a lasting mark on the sport.
Already one of the most consistent pass rushers in the league, Garrett has piled up 125.5 career sacks through nine seasons – a figure that places him in elite company.
He’s tied with Hall of Famer Dwight Freeney on the NFL’s all-time list and ranks third among active players, trailing only Von Miller and Cam Jordan, both of whom had a six-year head start on him.
Garrett‘s productivity over the past five seasons underscores how realistic his goal could be. He’s notched 83 sacks in that span, averaging about 16.6 sacks per season.
If he can sustain even 15 sacks per year for the next five seasons, he could become the NFL’s all-time sack leader, surpassing a record that has stood since 2003.
Aiming for immortality
Despite achieving a feat that many defenders only dream of, Garrett‘s aspirations continue to grow.
Breaking Bruce Smith‘s career sack record would require another 75 takedowns of opposing quarterbacks, a challenge few have ever come close to.
But given Garrett‘s relentless motor, technical refinement, and durability, the quest doesn’t seem out of reach.
As Garrett himself has suggested, he’s motivated by benchmarks that honor the game’s history and, above all, leave a lasting impact on the sport he dominates.
