How far can Norway and Erling Haaland go in the World Cup?

After years of inconsistency on the international stage, Norway national football team is heading into the 2026 FIFA World Cup with renewed belief-and a legitimate star power advantage led by Erling Haaland.

Norway’s qualification campaign sent a clear message to the rest of the field. Haaland was dominant, scoring 16 goals in just eight qualifiers and establishing himself as one of the most dangerous forwards heading into the tournament. His combination of size, speed and finishing ability gives Norway a weapon that very few national teams can match, particularly in high-pressure situations where a single goal can decide a match.

The bigger story, however, is that Norway is no longer a one-player team. The emergence and development of players like Martin Ødegaard and Antonio Nusa has transformed the squad into a more balanced and dynamic unit. Ødegaard provides control and creativity in midfield, dictating tempo and supplying chances, while Nusa adds pace and unpredictability on the wing.

Norway has elevated its squad

That supporting cast has elevated Norway into what many analysts now consider a rejuvenated European side capable of competing beyond the group stage. The team’s attacking profile is particularly dangerous in tournament settings, where efficient finishing and quick transitions can disrupt even the most organized defenses.

The key question is how far that attacking strength can carry them. Advancing out of the group stage appears to be a realistic expectation given their current form and depth. With Haaland leading the line and Ødegaard orchestrating the midfield, Norway has the tools to consistently create scoring opportunities against a wide range of opponents.

Once in the knockout rounds, the margin for error becomes much smaller. That is where Norway‘s lack of recent deep tournament experience could become a factor. Unlike traditional powerhouses, they have not consistently navigated the pressure of elimination matches on the global stage. However, having a striker like Haaland can offset some of that inexperience. Players capable of scoring at his rate can change the outcome of a match in a single moment.

Unpredictability works in favor of the Norwegian team

Another factor working in Norway‘s favor is the element of unpredictability. As a team not traditionally viewed among the elite contenders, they may face less pressure than established powers. That dynamic can allow them to play more freely, particularly in early knockout rounds, while opponents carry the weight of expectation.

Defensively, Norway will need to prove it can hold up against the tournament’s most complete teams. While their attack can compete with anyone, advancing deep into the World Cup typically requires balance on both ends of the pitch. If they can maintain structure and discipline defensively, their chances of pulling off an upset increase significantly.

Realistically, Norway enters the tournament as a dark horse with the potential to reach the quarterfinals, and possibly beyond if the bracket breaks in their favor. The presence of an elite goal scorer in peak form, combined with a growing supporting cast, makes them one of the more intriguing teams to watch.
