Heightened security at Ryder Cup after Charlie Kirk assassination raises fears of political targeting

In the wake of conservative activist Charlie Kirk’s assassination earlier this month, security officials have warned of an elevated threat level surrounding major public events, including the 45th Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black in New York.

Kirk, a vocal supporter and ally of President Donald Trump, was fatally shot during a speaking engagement in Utah, igniting concerns about politically motivated violence.

Those concerns have now spilled over into preparations for one of the world’s biggest sporting events. The Ryder Cup, a heated biennial clash between Team USA and Team Europe, is already a high-stakes affair.

But with Trump expected to attend the tournament’s opening day, the security apparatus has grown into one rivaling the Super Bowl. Officials are now preparing not just for crowd control but for potential political targeting in a volatile national climate.

Major Stephen Udice, head of security for the event, acknowledged the increased threat, warning that high-profile gatherings can become symbolic targets.

“The likelihood of someone trying to use an event like this to make a statement has only gone up,” he told the BBC. “We are planning as if threats exist. Anyone looking to create chaos will have multiple layers to get through.”

Security forces are deploying bomb-disposal units, drone surveillance, radiological detection teams, chemical agents, and K-9 squads. In addition, authorities are actively monitoring social media platforms for potential threats, with support from federal and state law enforcement.

Trump’s arrival presents additional security challenges

Trump’s anticipated appearance has added another level of complexity to an already dense operation. According to Ryder Cup director Bryan Karns, the former president’s visit may be the most logistically demanding aspect of the week.

While Trump is expected to arrive late Friday morning, after the early groups have teed off, his presence will still require significant disruption to standard operations.

“His arrival was built into the security plan over a year and a half ago,” Udice explained, “but it still requires intense coordination. Our goal is to keep spectators safe while minimizing delays.”

That goal has required collaboration between the Secret Service, the White House, local police, and federal agencies. A special command center has been built, and hundreds of additional New York state troopers have been deployed to Bethpage Black, which spans over 1,400 acres. Unlike a stadium with fixed entry points, the golf course’s expansive layout makes it significantly harder to secure.

Earlier this year, Trump’s appearance at the US Open men’s singles final caused a 30-minute delay due to ramped-up security. Organizers at the Ryder Cup are working hard to avoid a repeat, insisting that play will go on as scheduled despite the added precautions.

With global attention on the tournament, officials remain vigilant. Their aim is clear: deliver a world-class sporting event while ensuring the safety of players, fans, and dignitaries, no matter the political climate.
