The recent victory of the Mets against the Atlanta Braves by a score of 4-0 was of great importance for the aspirations of the New York team as with it they managed to reach the first position in the National League East Division.
However, not all was good news, as their starter, Griffin Canning, had to leave the game with a left leg injury, an injury that looks to be serious.
Canning was injured in the top of the third inning after making a pitch. He fell to the ground immediately, without contact with another player, which raised immediate concern for a possible rupture of the Achilles tendon.

Manager Carlos Mendoza confirmed after the game that this is the main suspicion of the coaching staff, and the pitcher is expected to undergo an MRI on Friday to determine the extent of the problem.

With Canning out of the game, the Mets’ bullpen took over effectively. Austin Warren, who had been called up that same day, came on in relief and pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings. The pitcher, a close friend of Canning’s from their days together with the Angels, confessed that the situation affected him emotionally.

How are the New York Mets doing?
The rest of the relief corps, Dedniel Nunez, Ryne Stanek and Edwin Diaz, took care of the final four innings without allowing a run, with six strikeouts in total.
With this injury, Canning becomes the third Mets starter to suffer an injury during June, joining Kodai Senga with a right hamstring strain and Tylor Megill with a right elbow sprain. Despite these setbacks, the team remains focused on competing.
“There is no panic, but there is a sense of urgency,”Mendoza said. “We’re asking ourselves how we keep getting better, what does everyone need to keep going. The important thing is that this group is consistent, resilient and competitive. And, above all, they enjoy playing.”

The right-hander was signed by the Mets during the offseason to a one-year contract, as part of a revamped rotation that also included Frankie Montas and Clay Holmes. Before Thursday’s game, Canning had a 3.91 ERA in 15 starts, establishing himself as a reliable arm in the middle of the rotation.
