For years, Fantasy managers have looked for clues in data such as the number of carries, rushing efficiency or the state of the offensive line. But analyzing the line can be a mess so “sack rate” can be simpler, this statistic is often used to evaluate quarterbacks as well as a lot of information about running backs.
The logic is simple: if an offensive line allows few sacks, it probably also creates space for the running back. In addition, fewer sacks means more sustained drives and therefore more opportunities in the red zone. In fact, according to a study, when an offense avoids sacks, its chances of scoring on the ground are almost quadrupled.
Running backs you should buy: those who run behind lines that protect
The 2025 data makes it clear that running backs behind low sack rate lines are performing at an elite level. Teams like Jacksonville (1.3%), Denver (1.33%) and Buffalo (2.38%) are among the best in protection and their running backs are taking advantage.

Running backs you should sell: when sack rate kills Fantasy value
At the other end of the spectrum, running backs running behind porous lines are suffering, even elite talents such as Tony Pollard or Nick Chubb are being limited by offenses unable to sustain drives.
- Chubb had a good second game in numbers, but his participation on third down is minimal and the Houston line is still a sieve. With tough opponents on the horizon, his value could plummet soon.
- In Pittsburgh, Jaylen Warren is one of the best fantasy RBs so far, but his schedule is getting tougher and the offense seems destined to stall with a sack rate of 9.59%.
In fantasy, every advantage counts. While other managers are still chasing traditional metrics, you can get one step ahead with a simple but powerful statistic like sack rate.
