It seems that Shakur Stevenson will be left wanting to fight Gervonta Davis, as ‘Tank’s’ trainer said that ‘Sugar’ “missed the opportunity” by not accepting the fight with Gervonta Davis when it was offered to him.
Trainer Kenny Ellis said that they have already turned the page regarding that possible fight, according to Boxing News 24.
“People want you to do what they want. No, it doesn’t work that way. We are the face of boxing. You missed the boat. He missed the boat. They don’t control us. They don’t tell us when to move. They don’t tell Tank when to move,” Ellis told MilCity Boxing, although he did not elaborate on when it was that Stevenson lost the opportunity to fight Davis
“It’s a possibility. You never know,” Ellis commented when asked if Shakur decided not to take the fight with Tank because of his hands
“As Tank says, he could retire. We’ll have to wait and see what he does. Whatever he does, I’ll respect it. If he goes ahead, he has my support. Many of these guys had the opportunity and didn’t take it. Move on. Life goes on,” added coach Ellis.
The outlet details that if Shakur was looking to move up to 135 pounds to hit the lottery with a money fight against Gervonta Davis, so far he has failed. And while he looks young to move up to 147 pounds to seek a fight against Ryan Garcia or Devin Haney, it could be a good plan B because in lightweight there are important fighters who could beat him, such as William Zepeda, Raymond Muratalla, Andy Cruz, Abdulla Mason and Jadier Herrera.

Stevenson, the WBC lightweight champion, hopes to get in the ring with Mexican William Zepeda, although negotiations do not seem to be going well either
“The fight is ordered by the WBC. I’m still champion and I’m not retiring from anything. If we can’t come to an agreement [with Golden Boy], then there will be a purse bid. See you soon,” Shakur said on X about his plans to seek a fight with Zepeda.
In addition, he complained that Turki Alalshikh did not offer him the amount he expected for a fight against Zepeda, as he was offered less money than he received for his last fight against Josh Padley.
