Gervonta Davis’ religious conversion: How Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson inspired him

Among today’s most electric figures in boxing, Gervonta Davis has never been one to shy away from reinvention.

The undefeated star, known worldwide as “The Tank”, confirmed his conversion to Islam in late 2023, a decision that caught many fans by surprise but also reflected a deeper search for meaning beyond fame and championship belts.

On December 24, 2023, Davis publicly took the Islamic declaration of faith (shahada) at Masjid Al-Hidaayah in Woodlawn, Maryland, adopting the Muslim name “Abdul Wahid,” meaning “servant of the One.”

Imam Hassan Abdi, who led the ceremony, described Davis as “very down-to-earth” and said their exchange focused on striving “to be the best version of what we can be as human beings.”

Although Davis has not legally changed his name, the public declaration marked a profound personal shift that may extend far beyond religion.

New faith, old ring game

Born and raised in Baltimore, Davis built his career on blistering power and relentless precision.

Since claiming his first major title in 2017, he has maintained an undefeated record and cemented himself as one of boxing’s most explosive performers.

“The Tank” became more than a nickname. It also symbolized his ability to bulldoze opponents while carrying the weight of expectation.

Now, with his newfound faith, Davis appears intent on redefining what that nickname means.

His decision to embrace Islam introduces a new layer to his public persona, one that blends humility and reflection with his trademark aggression inside the ropes.

From knockout artist to self-reflection

The timing of Davis‘s conversion coincides with a renewed focus on giving back to his community.

Reports indicate he purchased several properties in his childhood neighborhood of Sandtown-Winchester with plans to restore and make them affordable for local families.

Baltimore City Council President Nick Mosby praised the move, saying, “Tank… literally carries the city of Baltimore on his back.”

Imam Abdi suggested that Davis‘s charitable efforts may have influenced his faith journey:

“Him investing in the area … I think that may be also an influence to hear something different. Islam … makes us the best version of who we are, to be better human beings. We believe in one God and we worship him alone … and that brings accountability and responsibility for ourselves, and also trying to help others.”

Davis‘s story is not without turbulence. His off-ring controversies, including legal troubles, have often threatened to overshadow his achievements in the sport.

Against that backdrop, his embrace of Islam may represent both a turning point and a bid for inner peace, a new foundation from which to rebuild discipline and focus.

Davis follows in the footsteps of legends like Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson, who both drew strength and direction from their faith.

For Davis, that path could influence future decisions, from scheduling fights around Ramadan to rethinking sponsorships and community leadership roles.
