Gervonta Davis’ coach hints at surprise retirement after controversial Roach fight

Gervonta “Tank” Davis has long been considered one of boxing’s most electrifying talents, but his recent bout with Lamont Roach Jr. raised more questions than answers.

The WBA lightweight title fight on March 1 didn’t end in a knockout or a clear victory. Instead, it concluded with a majority draw that left fans divided and analysts scratching their heads.

During the ninth round, Davis unexpectedly took a knee and had his face wiped by a cornerman, two unusual moments that should have triggered penalties but didn’t. The actions have sparked criticism throughout the boxing world, with many questioning Tank’s decision-making and composure in the ring.

Mental state and speculation about retirement

Beyond the physical performance, it’s Davis’ mental state that has some insiders concerned. In the lead-up to the fight, the 29-year-old made multiple cryptic comments suggesting his career might be winding down. Claressa Shields, a fellow boxing star, even suggested that Davis should seek therapy due to his emotional tone and erratic statements.

Now, the speculation is intensifying

In an April 6 interview with MillCity Boxing,Davis‘ longtime coach Kenny Ellis addressed the retirement rumors directly. When asked about the possibility of a future fight between Davis and Shakur Stevenson, Ellis said, “They don’t tell Tank when to move. But it’s boxing, though. Anything might happen. You never know… Tank might retire, man.”

Ellis is prepared for any decision

Ellis made it clear that whatever Davis chooses, he will stand by him. “Whatever [Tank] do, I’ll respect it. If he keeps going, he’s got my support. If he retires, he’s got my support,” he added.

It’s rare to hear a top trainer speak so candidly about a fighter’s possible retirement, especially one still at the top of his game. But given Davis’ recent behavior and the controversial outcome against Roach, the future feels more uncertain than ever.

Whether Gervonta Davis will step into the ring again or step away for good remains to be seen. But for now, the boxing world watches and waits, wondering if one of its brightest stars is about to fade sooner than expected.
