The worst news was confirmed by the New York Yankees and Gerrit Cole must undergo Tommy John surgery on Tuesday that will leave him out for the entire 2025 season, and the Bronx Bombers are still in the midst of a nightmare, with a worrying list of injured players.
When Spring Training began, the Yankees reported with the illusion of revenge, boasting one of the most powerful rotations in Major League Baseball, and Cole knows it and sent an emotional message by reaffirming that despite adversity, he maintains his desire to conquer a World Series with the Bronx Bombers.
“Ever since I first dreamed of wearing the Yankees uniform, my goal has always been to help bring a World Series championship to New York. That dream hasn’t changed, I still believe in it, and I’m more determined than ever to achieve it,” Gerrit Cole wrote on his Instagram account.
Gerrit Cole faces long rehabilitation
After having the first alert for his right elbow ailment, Cole opted for a second opinion with sports surgeon Dr. Neal ElAttrache, who determined that the procedure was necessary, and on Tuesday, the Yankees ace will undergo Tommy John surgery at the Cedars-Sinai Kerlan-Jobe Institute in Los Angeles.
“Today, the most respected medical experts in the field recommend that I undergo Tommy John surgery. This is not the news any athlete wants to hear, but it is the next necessary step in my career,” Cole continued in his Instagram message.
Rehabilitation from Tommy John surgery takes between 12 and 18 months for players to recover, so Gerrit Cole will not only miss the 2025 season, but is also likely to miss part of 2026. He concluded his message with a commitment to work hard to return and, in the meantime, to support the Yankees every step of the way.
“I have a lot left to give, and I’m fully committed to the work ahead. I will attack my rehab every day and support the Yankees 2025 every step of the way. I love this game, I love competing, and I can’t wait to be back on the mound – stronger than ever,” Cole concluded.
