George Pickens may have supplanted CeeDee Lamb as Cowboys’ No. 1 wide receiver

With a 3-5-1 record at the 2025 season’s halfway point, the Dallas Cowboys are close to being out of playoff contention. They weren’t realistically expected to compete for a Super Bowl this season, but there has at least been some intriguing signs of hope.

Brian Schottenheimer has done well in his first season as head coach, cultivating a great culture in the locker room and developing strong relationships with his players. It’s been his relationship with CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens that has really stood out to many fans. Schottenheimer already worked with Lamb and quarterback Dak Prescott while he was the offensive coordinator, but Pickens has walked right into Schottenheimer’s team like he’s been there forever.

In doing so, Pickens has also made everyone around him better. His playstyle really lends itself to Prescott’s strengths, and Schottenheimer is maximizing the wide receiver. In fact, Pickens is playing so well that some Cowboys fans are wondering if he should be taking targets away from Lamb on a more frequent basis.

George Pickens is playing better than CeeDee Lamb according to the numbers

The numbers don’t lie either. When Prescott targets Pickens, he’s simply doing more efficient damage than Lamb is.

The caveat there is that Pickens benefitted greatly while Lamb was absent with an injury. But it goes to show that Pickens is truly breaking out in his debut season with the Cowboys. Having such a high passer rating when targeted is made even more impressive when you consider that Pickens is always working as a boundary receiver.

Dallas has an elite one-two punch at wide receiver. Lamb eats in the slot, while Pickens eats on the outside. Perhaps Pickens needs to eat just a little bit more going forward.
