From Eagles green to Chiefs red: how Taylor Swift’s football loyalties evolved before and after Travis Kelce

Before she became one of the most recognizable figures at Kansas City Chiefs games, Taylor Swift had a very different NFL allegiance.

Newly released footage from her Disney+ docuseries, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour | The End of an Era, has resurfaced a lesser-known detail from the singer’s past: long before her relationship with Travis Kelce, Swift was openly supporting the Philadelphia Eagles.

The documentary chronicles the six months of preparation that went into Swift‘s record-breaking Eras Tour, offering behind-the-scenes access to rehearsals, creative decisions, and personal moments before the tour launched.

In the opening scenes, Swift is seen arriving for her first day of rehearsals wearing a gray Philadelphia Eagles sweatshirt, an image that has quickly sparked renewed conversation about how her football loyalties have shifted in recent years.

Swift‘s connection to Philadelphia is well established. She grew up near Reading, Pennsylvania, and has referenced the Eagles in her music.

In her 2020 song “Gold Rush,” she included the lyric, “With my Eagles t-shirt hanging from the door,” a line that later required clarification when fans debated whether she meant the rock band or the NFL franchise. During an Eras Tour stop at Lincoln Financial Field, Swift addressed the confusion directly.

“I have a lyric that says ‘With my Eagles t-shirt hanging from the door,'” Swift told the crowd. “I saw some people wondering if it was the band the Eagles or the team the Eagles and I love the band the Eagles. But guys, come on. I’m from Philly. Of course it’s the team,” she added.

A relationship that reshaped a public sports identity

That longtime affiliation changed in 2023 when Swift began dating Travis Kelce, the star tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Since then, she has become a frequent presence at Arrowhead Stadium, regularly appearing in a VIP suite to support Kelce during games. Her enthusiastic embrace of Chiefs culture, often wearing team colors and celebrating victories, has effectively made her one of the franchise’s most visible celebrity supporters.

The shift, however, was not universally welcomed in Philadelphia. Ahead of the Chiefs–Eagles matchup in the Super Bowl, some Eagles fans expressed their frustration in dramatic fashion, including the creation of an X-rated anti-Swift T-shirt that circulated widely on social media.

Even Swift‘s father, Scott Swift, drew criticism when he attended the AFC Championship Game wearing a Kansas City Chiefs jacket, despite being a lifelong Eagles fan.

Swift‘s growing presence at NFL games has also altered how broadcasts handle celebrity coverage.

According to Front Office Sports, Swift has learned which areas of stadium suites are least visible to television cameras.

“There are areas within suites where people like Swift who are keenly aware of TV cameras can avoid them,” the report noted, adding that other high-profile partners, such as Hailee Steinfeld at Buffalo Bills games, are rarely shown on air.

Despite occasional backlash and her own comments about feeling overexposed, once referencing irritation from what she called “Brads and Chads”, Swift‘s presence remains a major cultural crossover moment between music and sports.

The rediscovery of her Eagles fandom adds nuance to that narrative, reminding fans that her current Chiefs loyalty is less a contradiction and more an evolution.
