Former Raiders WR Henry Ruggs moved to prison with increased security in Nevada

Former NFL star Henry Ruggs is once again changing facilities as the ex-Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver continues to serve his prison sentence.

Ruggs, a former standout at Alabama and a first-round pick of the Raiders, is now housed at the Northern Nevada Correctional Center in Carson City, which is a medium-security facility.

The move, first reported by the Las Vegas Review-Journal, represents the latest in a series of transfers since his sentencing.

Ruggs’ legal troubles stem from a tragic 2021 car crash in Las Vegas that claimed the life of Tina Tintor.

In May 2023, he pleaded guilty to driving under the influence resulting in death and misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter, as part of a plea agreement.

Ruggs was sentenced to 36 to 120 months in prison, and he will be eligible for parole in August 2026, with a mandatory consideration date of July 4, 2027.

The incident effectively ended his promising NFL career and drastically altered his life trajectory. Now, he continues to struggle to settle in one place while incarcerated.

Ruggs on the move again

Since the start of his sentence, Ruggs has been moved multiple times. Before his most recent transfer, he spent time at Casa Grande Transitional Housing in Las Vegas and High Desert State Prison near Indian Springs.

Now, at the Northern Nevada Correctional Center, Ruggs is part of a facility housing over 1,600 inmates and operating with a higher security level, reflecting the seriousness of his conviction.

Ruggs’ transfer marks a sobering milestone in a career once filled with promise. A highly touted wide receiver, he was selected 12th overall in the 2020 NFL Draft and showed early flashes of elite talent with the Raiders.

However, his off-field decisions were questionable before the fatal accident that not only ended his career, but also had devastating consequences for the victim’s family.

Remorse and regret after fatal car crash

Despite the severity of his sentence, Ruggs has made public appearances under controlled circumstances.

Earlier this year, he was granted a special release to participate in a Hope for Prisoners event, where he addressed the audience about the impact of his actions.

In a video captured by the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Ruggs expressed deep remorse when asked if he had any regrets: “One, I wish I could turn back the hands of time,” he commented.

This moment was seen as an attempt to show accountability and reflection on the life-changing consequences of the 2021 crash.

The case of Ruggs has sparked discussions around accountability, rehabilitation, and the NFL’s role in monitoring players off the field. Organizations such as MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) and other advocacy groups have frequently cited Ruggs’ case as an example of the dangers of impaired driving.

As Ruggs continues his sentence in Carson City, attention will likely remain on his progress and potential rehabilitation efforts.
