Floyd Mayweather cashes in big with spot-on bet in Canelo vs. Scull snoozefest

Floyd Mayweather may be retired from boxing, but his winning instincts clearly haven’t left the ring. The 50-0 legend recently walked away with $22,240.40 thanks to a well-placed $9,464 bet on the Canelo Álvarez vs. William Scull bout in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The fight was far from a classic, but Mayweather’s bet cashed in precisely because of that, he anticipated it would go the distance, and it did.

Canelo Álvarez retained his undisputed super middleweight crown on May 3, winning by unanimous decision. The scorecards read 115-113, 116-112, and 119-109, all in favor of the Mexican superstar. However, the bout itself set an unfortunate record: the fewest punches thrown in a 12-round title fight. Canelo himself didn’t hide his frustration after the final bell.

“It was a boring fight,” Álvarez said. “[Scull was] not trying to win, just trying to survive. I hate these kinds of fights.”

While the outcome was never really in doubt, the spectacle left fans wanting much more. With Scull offering minimal offense and Canelo unable to force a finish, the match lacked the firepower typically associated with a championship clash.

All eyes now on Crawford showdown

The good news? A redemption fight is already on the calendar. Canelo is set to face Terence “Bud” Crawford on September 12 in what could be one of the most anticipated fights of the year. Both men are regarded as pound-for-pound elites, and the matchup promises to deliver far more action than the Scull encounter.

“Crawford is one of the best out there,” Canelo said after the Scull fight. “It’s my pleasure to share the ring with that kind of a fighter.”

Mayweather proves once again he’s always a step ahead

Though no longer trading punches professionally, Mayweather continues to stay close to the sport, and profit from it. His latest bet is just another reminder of his sharp eye for the fight game. While the bout didn’t deliver for fans, it certainly paid off for “Money” Mayweather.
