Months ago, their rivalry took an unexpected turn when Gervonta Davis launched a harsh criticism of Terence Crawford‘s wife. Their rivalry, which was limited to them and their boxing careers, began when Davis sided with his then-friend, Errol Spence Jr., against Prime in 2023.
Since then, the two have exchanged insults and taunts. The situation escalated when Prime slyly mocked the WBA lightweight champion for not being invited to the prestigious Ring magazine awards gala in London in January.
This caused Davis to lash out with an “X” which he later deleted, not without first setting fire to the boxing community who condemned Davis’ outburst, including boxing expert Rick Glaser, who described what Tank said as “Very low on the part of Tank Davis”. Now, almost two months after the scandal, Floyd Mayweather has stepped in, urging both to put their bitter feud behind them.
Floyd Mayweather asks both boxers to be united
In a recent interview with FightHype TV, Floyd Mayweather could not hide his excitement at the possibility of Terence Crawford finally getting the fight of his dreams against Canelo Alvarez. “I think Terence Crawford right now, in boxing, is the best pound-4-pound boxer. It’s good to see him in the position he’s in,” said the 50-0 boxer.
Mayweather didn’t stop there, and also praised the Nebraska boxer’s personal life. “I think he has a beautiful family. I think he has a beautiful wife. A beautiful queen, a black queen. And there’s nothing better than a black woman in this world,” he said. The Michigan native immediately clarified that it was his opinion and that no one else had to agree.
Referring to the dispute with Gervonta Davis, Money May’s tone turned to regret. “I think, in boxing today, we need to start sticking together more. Push each other to be better instead of arguing on social media, that’s just my opinion. And support each other in a positive way,” he advised.
Reflecting on his own past, the undefeated legend was candid. “I found myself in the past, you know, with the young Floyd Mayweather, exchanging opinions on the internet with different people. But now I’m in a better place in my life,” he confessed.
It seems that Terence Crawford is also ready to bury the hatchet with Gervonta Davis, as he offered the latter a great opportunity on possibly the biggest card of the year.
Gervonta Davis would never be relegated to the background
The undisputed two-division champion knows what his fight against Canelo Alvarez means to the boxing world. It could not only be the biggest event of 2025, but it will also resonate in the sport’s history. With that in mind, the Nebraska fighter floated a bold idea to The Ring: why not give the undercard a special touch with a co-main event between Shakur Stevenson and Gervonta Davis?
Stevenson has long had his sights set on Gervonta Davis. Crawford sees the September season in Riyadh as the perfect setting to stage it. “It would be crazy [Davis vs. Stevenson], between Crawford and Canelo. It would be great,” the Nebraska boxer said.
However, the 37-year-old boxer realizes that it is a long shot, as Gervonta Davis would never be a secondary character, let alone for Terence Crawford. “If Tank wasn’t too arrogant to be on an undercard of Terence Crawford, that would be great. But I don’t see Tank giving in to any fighter because he’ll think it’s the Tank show. So I don’t know. But it should be a good undercard,” he said.
Although Tank has remained silent on the idea, even Shakur Stevenson is not convinced. He took to his X account to respectfully reject Bud’s offer, claiming that their fight deserves to be the main event.
Seeing Canelo, Crawford, Davis and Stevenson on the same card would have been magnificent. Unfortunately, we don’t live in a perfect world. What is your opinion on the whole dispute between Crawford and Davis?
