Authorities in St.Johns County, Florida, are investigating a tragic gold cart crash that claimed the life of a woman over the weekend. The incident has drawn renewed attention to the dangers surrounding recreational vehicle use, especially when alcohol is involved.

According to information released by local officials, the crash took place on Sunday in the Nocatee neighborhood. Two people were riding together when the woman suddenly fell from the moving golf cart and suffered fatal injuries.

Local news outlets later identified the driver as Angelo Theodosiou, the victim’s husband. Deputies responded to the scene and reported signs of impairment, noting that Theodosiou appeared intoxicated.

Officers describe signs of intoxication

A statement from St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office said deputies observed that Theodosiou had ”bloodshot eyes’‘ and smelled strongly of alcohol. Investigators say he refused to take a breath test after the crash. He was taken into custody on suspicion of DUI, and formal charges are pending.

His wife, identified as Christina, died shortly after falling from the vehicle and striking the pavement. No other vehicles were involved.

The loss has been described by authorities as both preventable and disturbing.

Investigators now plan to conduct further reviews of the vehicle, witness accounts and digital evidence to determine whether additional charges will be filed.

Officials warn of growing accident trend

Fatal golf cart accidents have become increasingly common across Florida, particularly in neighborhoods where carts are frequently used for short-distance transportation.

Officers emphasized the importance of treating carts with the same caution given to full-sized vehicles.

‘People need to know golf carts are not toys”, one officer said following the crash ”They’re dangerous, and they can kill people’

Safety experts note that golf carts lack several protective features found in standard road vehicles, including airbags, reinforced bumpers, and closed compartments. Even a minor bump, sudden stop or sharp turn can eject riders, especially when seatbelts aren’t being used.

A deputy offered a reminder to operators, including caution.

Don’t drink and drive, wear a seatbelt, have your headlights on, use blinkers, stay in your lane,” he said. ”It’s just like a car; however, golf carts don’t have the safety mechanisms of a car.

St. Johns County officials have not released additional details regarding funeral arrangements or the family’s response, but residents in the area have expressed condolences and concerns over safety in similar communities.

Authorities reaffirmed that the investigation remains ongoing.
