Iran’s embassy in Mexico has raised alarm bells about a possible change in the already fixed schedule for the next World Cup in the United States. Through a message on the social networks of the Islamic Republic’s embassy in Mexico, it was claimed that the country was in talks with FIFA to play its matches in Mexico. The organization chaired by Gianni Infantino prefers to be cautious and only states that the idea is for the competition to be played as agreed
“FIFA is in regular contact with all participating member associations, including the Iranian Football Federation, to discuss planning for the FIFA World Cup 2026. FIFA expects all participating teams to compete according to the match schedule announced on 6 December 2025,” FIFA told MARCA.
The account of the Mexican embassy quotes statements from the president of the Iranian Football Federation. “Mehdi Taj, President of the Iranian Football Federation: When Trump has clearly stated that he cannot guarantee the safety of the Iranian national team, we will definitely not travel to the United States. We are negotiating with FIFA for Iran’s World Cup matches to be held in Mexico,” says the message on social media.
“We reiterate that the United States does not cooperate with us on the issue of visas. We are interested in attending the World Cup, but the US government does not provide the necessary logistical or administrative support,” Psedniddeh told the official IRNA news agency as quoted by the embassy’s website.
Trump, from invitation to dissuasion
The situation with Iran at the World Cup in the United States remains up in the air and somewhat confusing. Infantino commented after talks with Trump that they were welcome to attend after the Iranian government said they would not be attending. The US president said they were welcome, but then advised them not to attend for their own safety.Iran is in Group G and will make its debut against New Zealand on June 16 in Inglewood, California. On the 21st, it will face Belgium in the same venue and on the 27th against Egypt in Seattle, so all its matches would have to be moved.
