Fernando Mendoza, the ‘Cuban’ QB favorite to win the Heisman Trophy who follows in Tom Brady’s footsteps: possible NFL Draft destinations

Fernando Mendoza is having a stellar time in college football. The Cuban-born quarterback is not only driving Indiana to repeat its path to the College Football Playoff, but has also become the most attractive name for the 2026 Draft.

Mendoza has had a brilliant start to the season that has led him to be compared to Tom Brady, the greatest possible honor for a player in his position.

The rise of Fernando Mendoza: from Miami to college football star

Mendoza came onto the national radar after a spectacular start to the campaign with Indiana, where he has fitted perfectly into Curt Cignetti‘s project. His performance against Illinois on September 20 with 21 of 23 passes completed, 267 yards and five touchdowns, was the definitive sign that Indiana had found its new leader.

His story, however, began long before. The quarterback grew up in Miami, surrounded by the Latino community and with a family deeply connected to its roots. “It’s a huge point of pride,” Mendoza said of his Cuban heritage, recalling the effort his grandparents made when they emigrated to the United States “starting from scratch.”

After his development at Christopher Columbus High School and a formative stint in California, where he was a starter in 2024, Mendoza entered the transfer portal and chose Indiana for a special reason: his brother Alberto, also a quarterback in the program.

The Mendoza brothers in Indiana

The presence of Alberto Mendoza was a key factor in Fernando choosing Bloomington. The two shared their training in Miami and now share the quarterback room at Indiana.

Heisman favorite and compared to Tom Brady

Mendoza not only dazzles with statistics, but also with his poise, leadership and discipline. His performance in the Big Ten Championship, where he led Indiana to a 13-10 victory over Ohio State, cemented his image as the most NFL-ready QB in 2026, clearly surpassing Ty Simpson, whose recent slump opened the door for Mendoza to remain as the QB1 of the next Draft.

Possible destinations for Fernando Mendoza in the 2026 NFL Draft

  • New Orleans Saints: If they end up with a high pick, Mendoza would be ideal for a project looking for long-term stability.
  • Las Vegas Raiders: After the failed experiment with Geno Smith, a young quarterback with character could be the start of a real rebuild.
  • Cleveland Browns: They have draft capital and are in desperate need of a reliable quarterback.
  • New York Jets: Probably the most attractive destination: an offense with weapons like Garrett Wilson and Breece Hall would be a perfect environment for a talent like Mendoza.

Fernando Mendoza is writing one of the most exciting stories in college football. His path points to the Heisman and soon, to become the next great NFL quarterback.
