Even Nikola Jokic can’t help but be impressed by “really mature” Cooper Flagg

What began as a typical late-December Western Conference showdown quickly turned into a defining moment of the young NBA season, and a coming-of-age performance for Cooper Flagg.

The Mavericks‘ 19-year-old phenom paced Dallas to a narrow 131-130 victory over the Denver Nuggets, flirting with a triple-double as he poured in 33 points, secured nine rebounds, and delivered nine assists on Tuesday night.

The result ended Denver‘s 11-game road winning streak and lit up a Mavericks roster still searching for a consistent identity and direction.

Flagg‘s stat line was eye-popping. He shot 14-for-21 from the field, including four 3-pointers on six attempts, and played nearly 40 minutes of high-impact basketball at the American Airlines Center.

“He was definitely a hot hand out there,” Nuggets star Nikola Jokic told ESPN, acknowledging Flagg‘s composure against one of the league’s most experienced competitors.

“But just, I’m going to say the poise that he played with, he doesn’t feel like he’s so young out there. He seems like he played meaningful games, and he was winning before. That’s my opinion. He looked really mature out there.”

Flagg‘s shooting and decision-making were critical from the jump. Dallas sprinted out to an early lead, highlighted by a 20-4 burst in the first quarter, with their rookie spearheading the offense alongside Anthony Davis, who added 31 points and nine rebounds.

“He filled up the stat sheet; he almost had a triple-double. But we played through him late, and he found the right guys and executed on both ends of the floor for us tonight,” coach Jason Kidd said postgame, pointing to how Flagg‘s expanded role at forward has unlocked more of his all-around potential.

Despite Dallas‘ scorching start, the Nuggets fought back behind strong nights from Jamal Murray and Jokic, pulling within one in the final minute and forcing a tense finish.

A missed game-winner by Denver‘s Peyton Watson at the buzzer punctuated a roller-coaster night.

Mavericks‘ resilience and Flagg‘s rising stock

Dallas has endured a patchy season, hampered by injuries and a long-term rebuild that has seen veterans come and go.

But in Flagg, the franchise appears to be developing more than just a cornerstone. They might be witnessing the birth of a new face of the franchise.

Flagg entered the game on the heels of a birthday and a recent string of improving performances.

Over his last stretch of games before Tuesday, he’s been averaging well into the high teens in scoring and showing significant growth in efficiency and playmaking.

“He saw a lot in the sense of on a back-to-back, understanding, to his standards, he might not have played well last night, and so for him to come and set the tone for us tonight,” Kidd added, underscoring the rising expectations around his rookie’s consistency.

Analysts and commentators pointed to Flagg‘s performance as a landmark night that could influence Rookie of the Year conversations, while social reactions have been electric, with many lauding his versatility and competitive edge.
