Mexican fighter Eduardo ‘Sugar’ Nunez was crowned the new world champion in the super featherweight division on Wednesday morning, after stripping the champion of the International Boxing Federation (IBF), Masanori Rikiishi, with a resounding unanimous decision

With his victory in Japan, ‘Sugar’ Nunez improved his record to 28 wins, 27 of them by knockout, and just one defeat. Throughout the fight, Nunez went in search of the fight and subjected his opponent to such an extent that he was even close to knocking him out.

However, true to Japanese style, he stood up to all the punishment thrown at him by his opponent

Meanwhile, ‘Sugar‘ pressed the fight for the first 10 rounds, when he finally let up, already feeling victory in the bag

The judges scored the fight 115-113, 116-112 and 117-111 all in favor of the fighter from Sinaloa, Mexico, to become the sixth current Mexican champion in the different divisions of boxing

On his official Instagram account, Eduardo dedicated his achievement to his brother and also celebrated his title with a video call with his family

“I am very happy, satisfied with the work we did tonight. We have worked 10, 13 years for this moment and thank God it came, we took the opportunity,” he said in an interview at the end of the fight.

‘Sugar’ Nuñez’s road to the title

In order to challenge the Japanese fighter Rikiishi, the Mexican ‘Sugar’ Nunez had to defeat the former world champion Shavkat Rakhimov in February last year, with the same style: going forward to pressure the opponent, attacking the lower areas, and then with powerful uppercuts and blows to the face until his opponent collapsed and could not continue in the 11th round.
