Edgar Berlanga claims he is the rival who did the most damage to Canelo Álvarez and he has a way to prove it

Edgar Berlanga’s showdown with Canelo Alvarez was expected to be a pivotal moment in his boxing career, possibly elevating him to the top of the super middleweight division.

However, despite his strong performance, the Puerto Rican boxer has found himself stuck in neutral ever since. Though he lost to Canelo in the third round, Berlanga’s effort in the ring remains one of the high points of his career-a moment he continues to leverage to silence critics.

But with limited action since that fight, Berlanga now faces mounting scrutiny and the need to prove himself once more.

Berlanga’s confidence and frustration with Canelo fight commentary

In a recent podcast appearance with Jay Hill and Alex, Berlanga didn’t hold back when discussing the fight with Canelo Alvarez, particularly the commentary surrounding it. The 27-year-old accused commentators of giving Canelo preferential treatment and downplaying his own contributions.

“They were glazing him,” Berlanga said.

“I hit him with a four-piece, and they don’t say nothing. He hits me with a hook, and it’s like, ‘Oh my God, he hits him with a hook, he’s hurt.’ I wasn’t hurt.”

While Berlanga admitted that Canelo has strong punches, he claimed they didn’t faze him, even mocking Alvarez’s punches during the fight.

As Berlanga continues to talk up his performance against Canelo, his career seems to be at a crossroads. One potential opportunity that could have reignited his career came in the form of a fight with Caleb Plant, a matchup that fans have long been eager to see. Berlanga has called out Plant multiple times, but the fight has yet to materialize.

In a recent Instagram live session, Plant revealed that his team had made an effort to set up the fight.

“My manager, personally, Luis DeCubas, reached out to Edgar Berlanga’s manager, Keith Connolly, and tried to make a fight for later this summer,” Plant explained.

But to his surprise, Berlanga turned the offer down.

“He didn’t want to fight,” Plant explained.

Since then, Berlanga has remained mostly silent on the matter, choosing not to address the claim directly. This missed opportunity to face a former world champion could have been the breakthrough he needed to propel his career back on track. Instead, Berlanga continues to focus on trash talk rather than securing high-profile victories.

With his career stalling and significant opportunities slipping away, Berlanga must refocus his efforts on proving himself in the ring. Words alone won’t elevate his standing in the boxing world-he needs to back up his bravado with meaningful victories.

The fight against Caleb Plant could have been the stepping stone he needed, but with that chance now gone, Berlanga must find another path to redemption. The clock is ticking, and his time to make an impact is running out.
