Drew Brees already knows who will win Super Bowl LIX: “The most desperate team wins”

The Philadelphia Eagles have already won Super Bowl LIX before even stepping onto the field. Quarterback-turned-analyst Drew Brees believes that desperation will lead head coach Nick Sirianni’s team to victory this Sunday when they face the Kansas City Chiefs in the battle for the Vince Lombardi Trophy.

The Eagles are making their third Super Bowl appearance in eight years, determined to erase the loss they suffered in 2022 against these same Chiefs. While Kansas City is favored by bookmakers by a slim margin of 1.5 points, Brees offers a different perspective.

In an interview on “The Pat McAfee Show,” the Super Bowl XLIV winner said that beyond the possible strategies of Sirianni and Andy Reid, it’s important to consider, “What happens to these teams if they were to lose?” The answer to this question determines who will return home with the championship ring, Brees explained.

The Chiefs are already a dynasty

According to Brees, Kansas City has nothing to lose. “If the Chiefs lose this game, man, it’s a missed opportunity for the three-peat. A missed opportunity to do something that has never been done before. Unprecedented. But still, they’re a freaking dynasty.“

The Chiefs, with Reid, quarterback Patrick Mahomes, and tight end Travis Kelce, can boast three championships in the past five years, with four Super Bowl appearances and an unbreakable dominance in the AFC. Meanwhile, the Eagles have everything to lose, assured the former New Orleans Saints star.

“Two out of three years they come to the Super Bowl and they lose this game,” Brees explained, adding that the team will wonder, “How are we ever gonna surpass the Chiefs? If we want to accomplish what we want, how are we?”

This makes Philadelphia the most dangerous team on the field on Sunday. “To me, if you said who has the most to lose, I think it’s the Philadelphia Eagles. So in that conversation, the most desperate team usually wins,” Brees concluded.

The Barkley factor

Finally, the former San Diego Chargers signal-caller asserted that running back Saquon Barkley will be key to the Eagles’ offense. “The Saquon Barkley factor, to me, is the only weakness in the Chiefs’ defense, and it’s their ability to stop the run consistently.”

He explained that if Barkley can keep the Eagles ahead of the chains, it will disarm the defense of coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. Conversely, if the Chiefs manage to stop the running back, forcing quarterback Jalen Hurts into long third-down situations, “Forget about it. You’re done.”
