Double heartbreak: Meet the five players who faced WBC finals defeats in 2023 and 2026

The sting of falling short on baseball’s biggest international stage is becoming an all-too-familiar feeling for Team USA. In the 2026 World Baseball Classic, a roster packed with elite talent once again reached the championship game, only to come up just short.

This time, Venezuela emerged victorious, defeating the United States in a tightly contested final and securing its place atop the baseball world.

For Paul Goldschmidt, the loss carried an especially difficult meaning. Already part of the Team USA squad that fell to Japan in the 2023 final, Goldschmidt now finds himself on the wrong side of history after a second consecutive runner-up finish.

Despite his leadership and experience, the outcome in 2026 mirrored the disappointment from three years prior.

The championship clash against Venezuela highlighted just how slim the margin for victory can be in international competition. Team USA showed flashes of offensive firepower but struggled to sustain momentum throughout the game.

Venezuela capitalized on key opportunities late, delivering the decisive plays that ultimately sealed the result. For the American side, it was another reminder that even the most talented rosters are not immune to pressure-filled moments.

Goldschmidt was not alone in reliving the heartbreak. Four of his teammates – David Bednar, Kyle Schwarber, Will Smith, and Bobby Witt Jr. – were also part of both the 2023 and 2026 squads. Together, the five players now share a rare and unfortunate distinction: appearing in consecutive World Baseball Classic finals without capturing a title.

A rare and unwanted place in baseball history

Reaching back-to-back finals in a tournament as competitive as the World Baseball Classic is a remarkable achievement. It reflects the depth and star power of Team USA’s program. However, finishing second twice adds a layer of frustration that is difficult to ignore.

This group’s experience underscores how unpredictable the tournament can be. Unlike a long MLB season, the World Baseball Classic is decided in a small number of high-stakes games, where a single swing or pitch can shift everything. In both 2023 and 2026, Team USA found itself just one step away from a championship, only to see the moment slip away.

Still, their repeated presence on baseball’s biggest international stage speaks volumes about their ability to compete at the highest level. Players like Goldschmidt and his teammates have consistently performed well enough to reach the final, even if the ultimate prize has remained out of reach.

While the losses will linger, so too will the recognition that they were among the best in the world – close enough to taste victory, yet twice denied the celebration that comes with it.
