Dolphins hire Jon-Eric Sullivan as new general manager to lead major franchise reset

The Miami Dolphins are turning the page on their front office, officially landing a new general manager to guide the franchise into its next chapter. After an extensive search process, Miami has settled on a respected executive with deep scouting roots and a strong NFL pedigree.

According to multiple reports, the Miami Dolphins are finalizing a deal to hire Jon-Eric Sullivan as the team’s new general manager. Sullivan, who had been one of four finalists, completed a second interview with Miami on Thursday before emerging as the choice to replace former GM Chris Grier.

For the first time in nearly a decade, the Dolphins will have a new voice overseeing football operations. Team owner Stephen Ross ultimately tabbed Sullivan after the organization began its GM search months earlier, following Grier’s departure in October.

Sullivan arrives in South Florida after a long and steady climb with the Green Bay Packers, where he spent more than two decades working in scouting and personnel. He joined the Packers organization in 2003 as a training camp intern and steadily rose through the ranks, serving as director of college scouting, co-director of player personnel, and most recently vice president of player personnel over the past four seasons.

Viewed league-wide as one of the brighter minds in talent evaluation, Sullivan now faces a complex rebuild. Miami enters the 2026 season with significant salary-cap questions and a looming quarterback dilemma involving Tua Tagovailoa, whose future with the franchise remains uncertain.

Head coach search comes next after McDaniel firing

Sullivan’s first major responsibility will be helping select the Dolphins’ next head coach. Miami dismissed Mike McDaniel earlier this week, just days after the season ended, ensuring that both the new GM and head coach will begin their tenures together in 2026.

NFL insiders report that Miami plans to complete its head coaching search quickly now that the general manager position is settled. Several candidates with Packers connections are already being discussed, including defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley and offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich. Former Green Bay head coach Mike McCarthy has also been mentioned as a possible option, should Miami prioritize experience.

Sullivan’s football background runs deep. He is the son of longtime coach Jerry Sullivan, who spent nearly 40 years coaching at the college and NFL levels and even served as the Dolphins’ wide receivers coach in 2004. That lineage, combined with Sullivan’s hands-on experience, helped make him an appealing candidate.

According to reports from The Athletic, Hall of Fame quarterback and ESPN analyst Troy Aikman was a strong supporter of Sullivan during Miami’s search after serving as a consultant throughout the process.

With Sullivan now in place, the Dolphins have officially begun a full reset-one that will define the direction of the franchise for years to come.
