Dolphins Free Agency: Zane Gonzalez joins as Miami parts ways with Jason Sanders

The Miami Dolphins are making bold moves in free agency. After releasing quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, the team has continued restructuring its roster, including the signing of veteran kicker Zane Gonzalez.

Tagovailoa’s departure marked the start of Miami’s free agency overhaul. In just two days, the Dolphins have added three key players:

  • Malik Willis, QB
  • Greg Dulcich, TE
  • Zane Gonzalez, K

Meanwhile, the team has parted ways with safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, offensive linemen Larry Borom and Cole Strange, and punter Jake Bailey.

Miami’s latest move brings in Gonzalez, a seasoned kicker, even though Jason Sanders remains on the roster.

Will there be competition for the Dolphins’ kicking job?

On Tuesday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter confirmed the signing on X (formerly Twitter):

Veteran kicker Zane Gonzalez agreed to a 1-year deal with the Dolphins, per his agent @MikeMcCartney7.

Gonzalez, a nine-year veteran, joins Miami after a one-season stint with the Atlanta Falcons. He appeared in nine games, converting 19 of 22 field goal attempts (86.4%).

The 30-year-old proved especially effective from long range in 2025, hitting seven of nine attempts from 50 yards or more and going a perfect 8-for-8 from 40 to 49 yards. He also converted all 17 extra-point attempts.

The Dolphins will be clearing out their kickers

According to Schefter, Gonzalez’s arrival means Miami will move on from both Sanders, who missed all of 2025 due to injury, and his replacement, Riley Patterson.

Sanders’ release will save the Dolphins $3.92 million against the salary cap, helping offset the $99 million dead cap hit from Tagovailoa’s departure.

Miami’s roster shake-up signals the start of a major rebuild, but early moves suggest the team is determined to head in the right direction.
