Does Pete Alonso have competition in New York? The Mets’ future at first base might change soon

As the New York Mets continue to build for the future, one name is emerging as a potential successor to star first baseman Pete Alonso; Ryan Clifford. The young prospect has been making waves in the Mets’ minor league system, showcasing a combination of power, plate discipline, and defensive prowess that make him a strong contender for the role.

Clifford, who spent most of the 2024 season with Double-A Binghamton, posted an impressive .228/.372/.421 batting line. Over 541 plate appearances, he hit 19 home runs and 27 doubles, demonstrating his ability to generate significant power at the plate. His 17.6% walk rate indicates a keen eye for pitches, although his 29.6% strikeout rate suggests there is still room for improvement.

With Pete Alonso’s future with the Mets uncertain, the organization is closely monitoring Clifford’s development. Alonso, who has been a cornerstone of the Mets’ lineup since his debut in 2019, has yet to sign a long-term extension, leaving the door open for potential changes at first base.

The development is encouraging

Clifford’s progress in the minor leagues has been promising, and his ability to adapt to higher levels of competition will be crucial in determining his readiness for the major leagues. The Mets’ front office and coaching staff are optimistic about his potential, seeing him as a valuable asset for the team’s future.

As Clifford continues to develop and refine his skills, Mets fans have reason to be excited about the prospect of seeing him in a Mets uniform. If he can maintain his power numbers and improve his consistency at the plate, he could be the next in line to take over at first base and bring a new dynamic to the Mets’ lineup.

The 2025 season will be a pivotal year for Clifford as he aims to solidify his place in the Mets’ future plans. Whether or not he can fill the shoes of a player like Pete Alonso remains to be seen, but the potential is undoubtedly there.
