Freddie Freeman‘s family suffered devastating news when almost a year ago, his four-year-old son Max was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre syndrome after being hospitalized.
Max suffered a rapid deterioration and total body paralysis due to this rare autoimmune disorder, but has now made an amazing recovery and his mother, Chelsea Freeman, revealed that he is 80 percent better nine months later.
Through her social networks, the baseball player’s wife announced the news about her son’s health and it was very encouraging news.
“Today we had Max’s nine-month neurological check-up. He has recovered 80% after today’s evaluation, and for the first time, he regained reflexes in his knees and feet,” Chelsea explained.
“She has finally surpassed her pre-Guillain-Barre weight. She continues to work hard in physical therapy to regain strength in her leg and feet (dorsiflexion) and improve. I have no words to express how grateful I am for these improvements.
Life has slowly started to feel more normal. I now realize how valuable health is. It’s everything. If you are the parent of a child with special needs, I have no words to describe how amazing you are.
What is Guillain-Barre syndrome?
Guillain-Barre syndrome is described as a condition in which the immune system attacks the nerves and can cause weakness, numbness or paralysis, according to the Mayo Clinic.
During the summer of 2024, the Freeman family suffered a major scare when Max was hospitalized, and Chelsea described it as a scary time.
“These have been the most difficult and frightening days of our lives. Maximus is such a special child and has been fighting so hard. His recovery will be a long road, but we have faith that he will make a full recovery.
“We have been blown away by his improvements over the last 48 hours. Maximus had his breathing tube removed and was taken off the ventilator yesterday, which is a huge win for us.
“We believe in the power of prayer and have witnessed a miracle in his recovery,” said Chelsea, who has two other children with Freddie Freeman, Brandon, 4, and Charlie, 8.
Chelsea continued to report on Max’s progress throughout last season, which culminated in the Dodgers’ World Series victory.
Freeman and the Dodgers defeated the Yankees in five games, coming from behind in the fifth game in the Bronx to win the eighth title in franchise history.
