Dodgers mascot comforts only dog not adopted at stadium event

As the adoption event wound down, the scene was familiar and bittersweet. New owners walked away smiling, dogs tugged eagerly at fresh leashes, and volunteers packed up tables after a successful day.

For Waldomar, a black Labrador retriever brought by Lancaster Animal Care Center, the ending looked different. He was the only dog left behind.

The event, hosted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in partnership with Tavo Pets, had done exactly what it set out to do. Every other dog Lancaster Animal Care Center brought to the California adoption fair found a home. Waldomar did not, despite spending the day calmly meeting adults, children, and other dogs.

As the crowd thinned, Waldomar waited.

What happened next was unscripted and quietly powerful

In a video later shared by Lancaster Animal Care Center on December 15, a Dodgers mascot approached Waldomar after the event had ended.

The costumed character knelt beside him, offering gentle head rubs, pets, and a long hug. The shelter captured the moment and shared it online with a simple caption that struck a chord.

“The Dodgers mascot stopped by to hug him and remind him he’s a good boy,” the shelter wrote.

Waldomar responded instantly. The roughly 88 lb, four-year-old Lab leaned into the attention, jumped up playfully, and even rolled on the ground with the mascot.

It was a burst of joy at the end of a long day, a reminder that affection still mattered even when the outcome had not gone as hoped.

From stray to shelter to second chance

Waldomar‘s road to that moment had not been easy. Lancaster Animal Care Center said he arrived as a stray, injured and alone. Over the two months that followed, no one expressed interest in adopting him, despite staff describing him as gentle, calm, and friendly.

“We brought him here hoping his luck would change,” the shelter explained in its post. “Everyone at the event loved him; he was gentle and calm, meeting tons of people, kids, and other dogs, but nobody was ready to take him home.”

With no adoption that day, the shelter made plans to move Waldomar to its sister facility, Agoura Animal Care Center, to give him a fresh start in a new environment.

“He’ll be there waiting for his forever home,” Lancaster Care Center shared in a separate post.

On Dec. 16, just one day after the video of Waldomar and the Dodgers mascot was shared, Lancaster Animal Care Center confirmed that Waldomar had been adopted. The shelter shared the update with PEOPLE, expressing relief and gratitude after weeks of uncertainty.

“We are just so happy for him! Lancaster is a very high intake shelter, and we’re grateful to Dodgers and Tavo Pets for hosting this event, where so many dogs found their forever homes!” Lancaster Care Center said. “We’d love for more of the community to come out to Lancaster and see what great dogs we have!”
