Dodgers’ Alex Vesia thanks Blue Jays for support during personal tragedy in 2025 World Series

When the Los Angeles Dodgers and Toronto Blue Jays faced off in a thrilling seven-game 2025 World Series, the stakes could not have been higher.

The Blue Jays came within striking distance of lifting their first Fall Classic trophy since 1993, yet ultimately fell just short in what many fans now call one of the most unforgettable championship series in recent memory.

The series was a showcase of talent, determination, and dramatic twists, keeping fans on the edge of their seats until the very last pitch.

Amid the high drama on the field, one of baseball’s most reliable bullpen arms was absent from the Dodgers’ roster. Alex Vesia, Los Angeles’ veteran lefthanded reliever, chose to step away from the postseason to deal with a profoundly personal tragedy.

Just as the World Series was beginning, Vesia and his wife, Kayla, endured the devastating death of their newborn daughter, Sterling Sol Vesia. The news sent ripples through the baseball community, highlighting the human side of professional sports beyond the scoreboard.

Tribute beyond the diamond

Though Vesia did not throw a single pitch in the World Series, his presence was felt in every clubhouse. In a touching gesture of solidarity, both Dodgers and Blue Jays players honored him by writing his jersey number – 51 – on their caps during key moments of the series.

What began as a tribute from his own Dodgers bullpen extended to the Blue Jays, who also recognized him during Game 6. The act demonstrated a rare unity in sports, showing that compassion can transcend rivalry.

Now back with the Dodgers as Spring Training begins, Vesia addressed reporters and reflected on the support he received.

In a prepared statement, he expressed heartfelt gratitude toward the Blue Jays’ organization, calling them “firstclass” and praising the players and staff for their empathy.

“It showed that it was much bigger than baseball,” Vesia said. For him and Kayla, seeing No. 51 on the hats of Toronto’s bullpen brought both comfort and tears, highlighting how gestures of kindness can have profound emotional impact.

Vesia‘s message resonated with fans across the baseball world. Donations poured in to children’s hospitals, social media campaigns celebrated his resilience, and fellow athletes applauded the way the Blue Jays and Dodgers demonstrated unity in a time of loss.

Beyond the numbers and stats, this moment reminded everyone that sports are ultimately about people supporting one another, especially in difficult times.

As the regular season approaches, Vesia‘s gratitude toward the Blue Jays remains a powerful reminder that compassion in athletics can extend far beyond competition.
