Dmitry Bivol joins Russian football club. Is the rematch against Canelo Alvarez fading away?

One of the fights that Saul “Canelo” Alvarez could agree to in 2026 would be the rematch against Dmitry Bivol for the world title in the light heavyweight category. However, a post on social media by the Russian monarch has cast doubt on whether this fight could take place in the future. It is worth remembering that both boxers faced each other on May 7, 2022, where the Mexican suffered his second defeat in his career.

After three years since that fight, the light heavyweight champion has not faced Canelo Alvarez again. However, have the chances of them meeting in the ring again faded? There is no doubt that soccer moves all kinds of walls, this time Dmitry Bivol decided to take some free time and spend it in the facilities of a team from St. Petersburg. Will he try his hand at the Russian soccer league?

Which football team was Dmitry Bivol recently seen with?

The Russian boxer, who is a big fan of soccer and the club, spent the whole day at the Zenit facilities, one of the main soccer clubs in Russia. There he went through the whole routine of the first team, starting with a gym session and finishing with work on the pitch. The Light Heavyweight belt holder showed that he has skill in his feet as well as his hands, playing a game with the first team players, where he even scored a couple of goals.

The reason why Dmitry Bivol was at Zenit’s facilities is because he was one of the guests of honor of the St. Petersburg team to celebrate its 100th anniversary. The Russian champion experienced the full experience of a new signing with the club, including the typical welcome corridor by the players. Therefore, it is not that Bivol is the new signing of the Russian team but has been part of the celebrations, along with multiple stars to this experience.

Will there be a rematch between Bivol and Canelo?

In recent statements by “Canelo” Alvarez, he said that one of the fights he wants to carry out is the rematch against Dmitry Bivol. However, there have been no official approaches for this to take place. Although Turki Alalashakih, the Mexican’s current promoter, has said that he would find this idea attractive, but that they are evaluating other boxers to set Canelo’s fights for 2026.

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s next fight will be on Saturday, September 13 against Terence Crawford in Las Vegas, Nevada, where he will put his super middleweight belts on the line. For the American, this category is not strange in his career, having fought several fights between 2016 and 2018. However, it has been mentioned that the fact of moving up in weight again and at an older age will make it difficult for him to show his usual technique in the welterweight division.

Meanwhile, Dmitry Bivol will face Artur Beterbiev in a rematch for the undisputed light heavyweight title. The fight will take place on February 22 at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This will be a unification fight, as Beterbiev holds the IBF, WBO and WBC titles, while Bivol is the WBA champion.
